Tommie Potts Tribute Concert Announced for the National Concert Hall

Fifth concert in the Irish Traditional Music Archive's 'Drawing from the Well' series will feature Aoife Ní Bhriaín, Noel Hill, Ronan Browne, Sharon Carty, Ryan Molloy, Seán Potts and more.

The National Concert Hall and the Irish Traditional Music Archive have announced that a special tribute concert dedicated to the music and influence of fiddle player Tommie Potts will take place on 14 March.

The concert is part of ITMA’s popular ‘Drawing from the Well’ series, which recently featured a sold-out tribute to Tommy Peoples.

Born in Dublin in 1912, Potts’ fiddle playing has influenced generations of musicians. He released the classic The Liffey Banks recording on the Claddagh label in 1972 and his music was also the subject of a PhD by the late Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. Potts died in 1988 but has been the subject of a number of musical projects since. A posthumous album containing additional recordings, Tommie Potts – Traditional Fiddle Music from Dublin, was released by RTÉ in 2012.

The ‘Drawing from the Well: Tommie Potts’ concert will feature a number of artists including Aoife Ní Bhriaín (fiddle), Noel Hill (concertina), Sharon Carty (mezzo-soprano), Ryan Molloy (piano), Liam O’Connor (fiddle), Sibéal Davitt (dancer), Ronan Browne (uilleann Pipes), Ellen Potts (fiddle), Seán Potts (Uilleann Pipes), Paul McGrattan (flute), Seán Ó Broin (flute), Cuthbert Tura Arutura (dancer), Paula Meehan (poet) and more. The event will be hosted by historian and broadcaster Dónal Fallon.

The concert is part of the NCH’s St Patrick’s Day series, which also features the Kilfenora Céilí Band and guests on 16 March, and the Music of Shaun Davey performed by the National Symphony Orchestra, including the world premiere of his St Patrick’s Overture, on St Patrick’s Day.

Tickets for the Tommie Potts tribute and the Kilfenora Céilí Band will go on sale on Wednesday 13 December. Tickets for the Shaun Davey concert are on sale now.
