Music for Galway presents: Cellissimo

Saturday, 18 May 2024, 1.00pm

Music for Galway presents
Cellissimo
18–26 May 2024
A new international cello festival on the edge of Europe

The international cello festival Cellissimo will takes place in Galway over nine days from 18 to 26 May.

Presented by Music for Galway, the festival features a substantial programme of concerts, masterclasses, world premieres, international and Irish artists, talks, a children’s theatre show, a film screening, an Inishbofin Cello Trail, a student showcase, traditional music sessions, and more.

Featured cellists include Alban Gerhardt, Camille Thomas, Natalie Clein, Jakob Koranyi, Nicolas Alstaedt, Adrian Mantu, Neil Martin, William Butt, Naomi Berrill, Killian White, Catherine Cotter, Cello Ireland and more.

They will be joined by a range of other artists including Finghin Collins, Hugh Tinney, Claudia Boyle, Eimear Noone, Daria van den Bercken, National Symphony Orchestra, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Matthew Berrill, Stephanie Dufresne and more.

There are also a range of premieres from composers Đuro Živković, Donnacha Dennehy, Garth Knox, Jennifer Walshe, Lasse Thorosen, Kevin O’Connell, Elaine Agnew, Anne-Marie O’Farrell, Hawar Tawfiq, Amanda Feery and Karmit Fadael.

Cellissimo has a significant social and political element, with aspects that explore the ‘two burning issues of our time: climate change and migration’. A central programming strand, Songs of Travel, a partnership with festivals from Sweden (Fairplay Chamber Music), Norway (Valdres Sommersymfoni) and the Netherlands (Piano Biennale), and the Austria gaming company Cause Creations, supported by Creative Europe, aims to develop a sustainable model for specialised music festivals while improving access to contemporary classical music.

The opening concert will feature a keynote address on climate justice by former President of Ireland Mary Robinson.

Bach Plus Series
A Tale of Sixes! Just as the six monumental Bach Cello Suites form the core of the entire solo cello repertoire, the Bach Plus Series forms the core of Cellissimo. Each day at 1.00pm, starting on Monday 20th May, we present a different cellist in the heart of Galway, in the historic setting of St Nicholas Collegiate Church. Six days, six suites, six cellists. But that is not all. Music for Galway has commissioned six new solo cello works from six different Irish composers, one of which will be premiered each day alongside its partner suite.
