CMAT

Dublin's country-tinged pop sensation CMAT released her second studio album Crazymad, For Me on 13 October 2023.

Dubbing herself both "the jackass of the Dublin music scene" and a "global pop star" does well not only to reveal CMAT's endearing sense of humour, but also neatly captures the all-encompassing appeal of her sound. Born Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson in Dublin, Ireland in 1996, CMAT moved to Manchester at the age of 17 to pursue her musical career with her then-band, Bad Sea. Having taken notes from Charli XCX after meeting the star at a listening session, the young artist began to focus on her own solo project.

While living with her grandparents back in Ireland, Thompson set herself the goal of writing a song a week, and as the pandemic hit, realised that some of her efforts were actually very good. She released the hilariously frank and relatable 'Another Day (KFC)' in April 2020, which established a sound with full band-lead pop at its heart and a healthy pinch of Dolly Parton country glam. Thompson has called her vast mix of influences an identity crisis, telling NME in October 2022 that her style is "Dolly Parton meets Weird Al Yankovic, mixed with Katy Perry." This concoction clearly worked, signing a deal with AWAL Recordings for her debut album, If My Wife New, I'd Be Dead, released in March 2022.

The album featured the songs 'I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!', 'No More Virgos' and her biggest hit yet, 'I Don't Really Care for You'.
