The 41st Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy (Willie Clancy Summer School) takes place in MiItown Malbay, Co. Clare, from 6 to 14 July. See below for full details:

SATURDAY 6 JULY

  • 2–6pm Clárú/Registration at Community Centre, Miltown Malbay
  • 8pm Oscailt Oifigiúil/Official Opening by Orlaith McBride, Stiúrthóir, An Chomhairle Ealaíon / Director, The Arts Council
  • 8.30pm Breandán Breathnach Memorial Lecture: The Harp That Once Now Dances a Jig: The Irish Harp 1900-2010. Dr Helen Lawlor, author and lecturer in Irish music, ethnomusicology and music education, Dundalk Institute of Technology.
  • 9.30pm Céilithe at Mill Marquee, GAA grounds, Miltown Malbay & Quilty Tavern, Quilty. 

SUNDAY 7 JULY

  • 10am Aifreann i nGaeilge (Mass in Irish) at St Joseph’s Church, Miltown Malbay. 
  • 3pm Musical Tribute at Willie Clancy’s Grave
  • 7–9pm Registration at Community Centre
  • 8pm Éirinn is Alba. A concert celebrating the links between Gaelic Scotland and Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy agus á chraoladh beo ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.

MONDAY 8 JULY

  • 10am–1pm Classes & Workshops
  • 3pm Lecture: Who Dares to Wear the Red Hand Badge: Songs and Poetry of the 1913 Dublin Lockout. Francis Devine, trade union activist, historian, poet and singer. 
  • 5pm Harp Recital at Mill Marquee, with Laoise Kelly, Kathleen Loughnane, Cormac De Barra, Paul Dooley, Gráinne Hambley, Máire Ní Chathasaigh, Helen Lawlor and guest performers.

  • 3pm Lecture: A West Clare legacy: An Exploration of the Rhythms and Unique Accent of West Clare Fiddle Music. Dr Máire O’Keeffe, musician, author and traditional music historian. 
  • 5–10pm Banjo Recital at Mill Marquee, with Kieran Hanrahan, Joanne O’Connor, Theresa O’Grady, Muireann Banks, Ted Kelly, Gavin Strappe, Brian Scahill, Adrian McAuliffe and guest performers. 
  • 8pm Piping Recital at Community Centre, with Nollaig Mac Carthaigh, Peter Browne, Sheila Friel, Dave Hegarty, Séamus Ó Rócháin, Leo Rickard, Banba Fitzgerald and Cormac Cannon.

THURSDAY 11 JULY

  • 10am-1pm Classes and Workshops 
  • 2pm Lecture: Joe Cooley and the Early Tulla Céilí Band. Dr Charlie Piggott, musician, founder member of the group Dé Danann, and researcher in food science at the University of Limerick. 
  • 4pm Button Accordion Recital at Community Centre, with Joe Burke, Jackie Daly, Anne Conroy, Charlie Harris, Breanndán Ó Beaglaíoch, Conor Keane, Josephine Marsh, Joe Searson, Colm Gannon, Johnny Connolly and guest performers. 
  • 8pm Old-Style Step Dancing, Sean-Nós Dance and Set Dancing Exhibition at Community Centre, with Michael Tubridy, Brooks Academy, Mary Clancy, Paddy Neylon, Aidan Vaughan, Betty McCoy, Mick Mulkerrin, Mairéad Casey, Timmy McCarthy, Margaret Wray, Patrick O’Dea, Noel Devery and guest performers.

FRIDAY 12 JULY

  • 10am-1pm Classes and Workshops 
  • 3pm Traditional Singing Recital (in Irish & English) at Community Centre, with Pól Ó Ceannabháin, Jerry O’Reilly, Seosaimhín Ní Bheaglaíoch, John Flanagan, Tony Mac Ruairí, Eoiní Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin, Róisín White, Martin Burke, Nan Tom Teaimín de Búrca, Mike Flynn, Seán Breen and guest performers. 
  • 5–7pm Harmonica Recital at Mill Marquee, with Mick Kinsella, Rick Epping, John and Pip Murphy, Johnny Hehir, and guest performers. 
  • 8pm Concertina Recital at Community Centre, with Noel Hill, Timmy Collins, Lorraine O’Brien, Caitlín Nic Ghabhann, Cormac Begley, Edel Fox, Dympna O’Sullivan, Jack Talty, Michelle Mulcahy, Hugh Healy, Claire Keville, Aoife Kelly, Katie O’Sullivan, Jackie McCarthy, Mary MacNamara and guest performers.
