Thomas Parkes of the Jimmy Cake

Popular Music

The Dublin band the Jimmy Cake has assembled a cult following of sorts, though it’s five years since the band has released an album — Spectre and Crown in 2008 — and before that there was a similar five-year gap without a release. Over the years the band had radically changed it’s sound, from a nine-piece core that included instruments such as bouzouki, banjo, clarinet and accordion, to its present-day form, which is dominated by synthesisers, the familiar guitar, bass and drums backbone, and longer, more expansive forms.

This year, the Jimmy Cake hopes to release a new album, titled Popular Music. The album will only have three tracks, totalling seventy-two minutes. It will be released on 180g vinyl, with a track on each of three sides, featuring illustrations by the artist Jack Teagle. (The album will also be released on CD and as a download.) The band is running a FundIt campaign to support the mixing, mastering and manufacture of the record, and hopes to raise €7,500 by Wednesday, 6 February.

As with all FundIt campaigns, a number of rewards are available to those who contribute, including downloads of the album, Jimmy Cake t-shirts, entry to the launch gig, copies of the vinyl release and prints of the album artwork.
