Five Scores for the Military Road

The Irish artist Fiona Hallinan is embarking on a new project to create a database of site-specific audio pieces based on Irish roads, as well as roads further afield. For the first part of Heterodyne, Hallinan has invited a number of composers and musicians to create musical scores for the Military Road in the Wicklow Mountains.

Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Cian Nugent, John Lambert (Chequerboard), ARROW-SHOWER and Brendan William Jenkinson have all been commissioned as part of ‘Five Scores for the Military Road’. Soundscapes made of field recordings by Tadhg O’Sullivan are intended to lend context to the works.

The scores will be launched at an event in June 2013, with minibuses travelling from Dublin to the Military Barracks at Aghavannagh, where a live performance and reception will take place.

Hallinan, who is running a FundIt campaign to support the project, has created a number of site-specific audio works in the past, including It’s an Audio Detour, where participants were brought on an audio tour of Dublin, and an installation about the I95 highway in Providence, Rhode Island.

Depending on the level of funding given, those supporting the Heterodyne project will receive scores of the pieces, an invitation to the launch (including travel) and a dinner event held in Dublin.
