Interstate 695 by Solomon Grey - from the Music For Picture: Vol. I (Parallels) EP

As Solomon Grey, duo Tom Kingston and Joe Wilson are simultaneously lauded for their commercial releases and music for picture that tread a sonic landscape side-by-side.

The first single from their new Music For Picture EP series is ‘Interstate 695’ (out January 31) - a dynamic vocal-led song that builds from an emotive ethereal start to a shimmering and joyous crescendo, featuring big analogue synths, pulsing drums, wide strings and other orchestral score elements, inspired by Solomon Grey’s soundtrack work. Also on the first EP - Music For Picture: Vol. I (Parallels) released on March 27th - are tracks ‘Chennai’ and ‘The Return’, which has already been brought to life as part of Sony PlayStation’s dystopian advert for PSVR.”

This series presents a selection of new works, written for and inspired by moving images, with each EP exploring a different theme. Vol. I (Parallels) showcases the duo’s more euphoric cinematic side, its three tracks featuring signature other-worldly, emotional, epic sounds for which Solomon Grey are renowned - not least to European cinema-goers from the use of their track ‘The Rift’ in Vue Cinemas’ ‘This Is Not a Cinema’ ident.

Solomon Grey return with this music, the first new music since the success of their original soundtrack for hit BBC/Showtime television show Back To Life that made many ‘Best Of’ lists on both sides of the Atlantic at the end of 2019.

Of the conceptual inspiration behind the series, Joe explains: “We often talk about imagery and movie-based visuals while we’re writing. In making Music For Picture we played with the idea of watching the films of our childhood and drew inspiration from reflections on our youth from where we are now - what that innocence means to us, and how would we score it.

“I envisioned ‘Interstate 695’ as the last track in an indie youth movie, played in a scene with the character on a BMX riding through a street out of their town.”

Music For Picture: Vol. I (Parallels) marks Solomon Grey’s first commercial release since 2019’s ‘Home’, that also became a sync success, featuring in hit US TV shows Power, Animal Kingdom and How To Get Away With Murder. The new EP also follows Solomon Grey’s soundtrack to BBC/Showtime critically acclaimed 2019 series Back To Life - which topped end of year polls in Vogue, The Times, The Guardian, Digital Spy, TIME, USA Today and more.

Since their debut release ‘Gen V’ on Black Butter in 2013, to further releases on Kitsuné, Decca and Mercury KX, Kingston and Wilson’s musical output has varied from sparse electronica to epic orchestral but the one constant attributed to their music is the sense of escapism - the ability to transport the listener to a different place. The Music For Picture EP series will continue this, providing a medium to transcend the listener.

The end of January, February and March 2020 will see singles from Music For Picture: Vol. I (Parallels) released one-by-one, with a newly-themed second volume to follow. This series precedes Solomon Grey’s next full-length album which will be released as fully immersive 360 audio listening experience later in 2020.
