Scoil Acla is one of Irelands oldest summer schools. It was originally founded in 1910 for teaching the Irish Language, music, dance and Arts and culture.
The present day Scoil Acla continues to reinvent itself with fresh ideas and leads the way for others to follow. It is a week-long traditional music and cultural summer school on Achill Island comprising of classes in Traditional Irish Music, Irish language classes – Achill dialect (Gaelig’ Acla), and Sean-Nós singing plus workshops in Traditional Irish Dancing and Sean nós dancing, Creative Writing course, basket weaving, concerts, poetry readings, competitions, recitals, walks and talks etc. Achill Island has always been a haven for artists, writers, poets, musicians etc and the famous artist Paul Henry played a central role in the 1910 Scoil Acla as did many of his peers. We continually celebrate this very important link with various walks, talks and events of this nature.
