wondrous world within/without
EXHIBITION – Karen Power: wondrous worlds within/without: interspecies gossip (2024)
Karen Power is a Cork County-based artist who makes compositions presented in various forms, including music for concert, installation, and site-specific performance. Power’s works draw from field recordings she has been conducting in multiple remote locations across the globe in the last decade, where she listens and unearths sonic qualities unique to each environment.
wondrous worlds within/without: interspecies gossip is an 8-channel installation featuring sounds taken from past and recent field recordings made in the Arctic, Amazon, Namib Desert, Australian Outback, New Zealand, and Antarctica. The composition ebbs and flows as the layered sonic elements interact via eight speakers positioned in the gallery. The audience perceives these sonic elements from their particular listening point and experience of the locale, being invited to hear our world differently.
Wondrous worlds within/without: interspecies gossip was commissioned by SIRIUS with the support of an Arts Council Commission Award 2021. The process and creation of this work is informed by a series of workshops undertaken with a group from YMCA Cobh Parents and Kids Together. This exhibition is curated by Miguel Amado, director, SIRIUS.
