Friday, 23 February 2024, 10.00am

Dublin City Council has announced a seminar titled "George Moore in Dublin", to be held at the Hugh Lane Gallery on Friday, 23 February 2024, from 10am to 4pm. The event offers a series of talks and a musical recital dedicated to the life and influence of the notable Irish writer George Moore (1852-1933).

The seminar will feature illustrated talks by speakers including Logan Sisley, the acting Head of Collections at Hugh Lane Gallery, who will present on "George Moore and Hugh Lane’s Gallery of Modern Art." Author, critic, and editor Peter Costello will deliver a talk titled "Ireland’s Debt to George Moore – a personal appraisal".

Dr Noreen Doody, a former senior lecturer at Dublin City University, will explore George Moore's relationship with Dublin in her presentation, "‘A place to escape from’: almost home – George Moore’s Dublin." Adding to the event, Adrian Frazier, emeritus professor of the University of Galway and a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, will discuss "George Moore and the British Impressionist Painter Clara Christian McCarthy."

The seminar will also include a recital by Una Hunt, featuring works by composers Michele Esposito, Augusta Holmès, Claude Debussy, and Frédéric Chopin.

Dr Mary Pierse, Trustee of The George Moore Association and co-editor of "George Moore: Spheres of Influence," will introduce the event. Dr Brendan Fleming, a University of Oxford graduate and an expert on George Moore's writings, will chair the seminar.

Admission to the seminar is free, with a limited number of tickets available through Eventbrite. The organisers note that while the event may initially appear sold out, additional capacity will be available on the day of the seminar, and no prior booking is required.

The "George Moore in Dublin" seminar is presented in association with the George Moore Association. Further details and programme updates are available on the Hugh Lane Gallery website.
