Out of Step: Draw/Scratch/Paint - 16mm direct animation
Direct Animation, also known as Scratch Film, is the process of drawing and scratching designs directly onto 16mm filmstrips. Images are hand painted on clear and black film leader using paints, markers, and ink. Other techniques include stencilling, etching, and the use of found footage spliced directly into 16mm
In this free workshop and open to all, we want to involve as many local communities as possible - from young children and families to experienced film veterans or artists working in other media! Informal in nature and very hands-on, you will be introduced to the playful and inventive world of creating moving image without a camera. The end result: a film fully created and manipulated by hand. The filmstrips will be assembled together and projected at the end of the session for viewing together.
The workshop will cover
- a short introduction to analogue film and direct animation
- a demonstration of how to use the materials
- Drawing, painting and manipulating the filmstrips
- A screening of the finished assembled film
This event is part of Out of Step, a film and music weekender curated by Art for Blind as part of their residency at The Model Sligo and funded by the Arts Council.
**The workshop will run from 12pm for approx 1.5 hours, with the film screening of both the completed hand drawn film and Dusty Stacks of Mom following at 2pm.**
