Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Thomas Bartlett self-titled album, out on Real World Records on 13th September 2019.

Toner Quinn 1

Why I gave the above rating:

A thoughtful and often very beautiful album with inventive, free playing from Ó Raghallaigh on hardanger d’amore fiddle and Bartlett on piano, from the fourteen-minute ‘Open Shelter’ to a reprise of the opening of the Gloaming song ’Fáinleog’. Much of the album is improvised around short motifs, tunes or fragments. It feels like a conclusion to a five-album arc that began with Ó Raghallaigh’s 'Where the One Eyed Man is King' and continued with 'Music for an Elliptical Orbit', 'Laghdú' and 'All Soundings Are True'. The tune ‘Zona Rosa’, with its walking chord progression on piano and Ó Raghallaigh’s subtly changing melodies on top is one of the most crafted tracks, but the pair's touch on 'All Good Things', with a winding melody they follow to its conclusion, also shows how intuitive their musical language has become.
