Oidhreacht Eochaille

Ceolta Sí and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Eochaille are launching their very first traditional Irish music CD titled Oidhreacht Eochaille (The Heritage of Youghal).
The CD is the culmination of an exciting year-long project, in collaboration with Dr Daithí Kearney and Dr Adèle Commins of Dundalk Institute of Technology, which researched the local stories and musical heritage of Youghal and the surrounding area. This research led to the re-discovery of forgotten tunes and songs, and also resulted in the composition of new music to celebrate the heritage of Youghal. One example is a ballad called “McGrath’s Clock Gate” which was created after listening to stories told by John McGrath about his time growing up in the Clock Gate. A pageant showcasing the music was produced and performed live by Ceolta Sí during the IRONMAN Cork event in 2019, and some of the new music was also used in the Comhaltas Summer Seisiún shows that took place over the summer months at Brú na Sí, Youghal.
We are delighted to now have the music recorded and available on CD. It is a great achievement for all the members of Ceolta Sí and Youghal Comhaltas and also a fantastic asset for Youghal as it celebrates the town and the locality.
The launch of the CD will take place on Saturday, 8th February 2020 at 7.30pm in the Walter Raleigh Hotel, Youghal.
