Playwright Residency

Playwright Residency

Friday, 15 December 2023, 5.30pm

The New York Listowel International Residency supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Kerry County Arts Office is a two-part residency taking place in both Listowel, Ireland and New York, USA.

Its aim is to facilitate connections between artists from the experimental theatre, dance and performance worlds in both Ireland and New York.

7 artists will be chosen (4 from Ireland, 3 from New York)

They will spend 2 weeks (May 20th- June 2nd 2024) in Listowel, a small Irish town in North Kerry renowned for its literary heritage and 1 week (January 2025) in the Irish Arts Center, New York.

There will be an opportunity to do work in progress showings at the International Listowel Writers’ Week Literary Festival in Listowel (which runs during the residency), and at the Irish Arts Center in January. International presenters, curators, and other industry people will be in attendance at both locations.

This residency is an excellent opportunity to develop an international aspect to your practice and to showcase your work to new audiences.

Mentors:

The awardees will be joined in Listowel by accomplished New York artists Tina Satter (Half Straddle) and Richard Maxwell (New York City Players). Richard and Tina, whilst making time for one-on-one sessions with the awardees, will also be workshopping their own work during the two weeks in Listowel, rehearsals for which the awardees can attend or participate in.

What the residency provides:

Accommodation and travel costs will be arranged and covered for the selected artists, and each will receive a modest daily subsistence allowance plus a fee of €1,500.

In Listowel, the artists will have access to multiple spaces and facilities in the town. St. John’s Theatre & Arts Centre will discuss the needs of the selected artists and will seek ways to accommodate these needs in a bespoke manner. At the end of the residency, there will be an opportunity for artists to share their work with industry peers and producers, as part of the International Listowel Writers’ Week Literary Festival.

In New York, the Irish Arts Center will provide a workspace for the artists and in collaboration with First Irish Festival, Half Straddle and New York City Players will organise and host another opportunity for awardees to showcase their work.

(NB. Travel and expenses aren’t covered when the awardees are in their home country)

(NB: Awardees MUST be available to be in Listowel from the 20th May for two weeks).
