Indian Classical Music and Beyond with Debajyoti Sanyal (tabla) and Dara O’Brien (sitar)

Debajyoti Sanyal (India) and Dara O’Brien (Ireland) present Indian classical and contemporary music. The ancient and sophisticated classical music of North India is rich in emotion, depth and nuance, it transports listeners on an immersive journey from the sublime to the euphoric. These musicians also explore the sonic possibilities of these iconic instruments through contemporary composition and technology.

Debajyoti Sanyal from Kolkata, India, is a world-class exponent of the Indian classical tabla (percussion). His training began at age four with his father, and continued with luminaries of the tradition, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and Pandit Shankar Ghosh. He tours regularly nationally and internationally, performing in a variety of contexts, from classical to experimental. He blends extraordinary virtuosity with a subtle nuance of expression.

Dara O’Brien is a composer, music educator and performer (sitar, guitar). He completed a PhD in Indian classical music at UCC where he lectures and teaches improvisation and sitar. He also works as a music therapist in the field of autism. He studied in India over many years under his mentor, Sougata Roy Chowdhury. His eclectic experience as a composer and performer includes ‘global fusion’, Indian classical music, jazz, rock, experimental sound, film, and music for contemporary dance.

“extraordinary musician and composer…the genius of amazing Irish instrumentalist Dara O’Brien.” Patrick Brennan, Irish Examiner
