Handmade Music is a brand-new experimental music night specially curated to feature an amazing mix of well-known artists, lesser-known artists, and surprise guests! All performing music from the edges of their craft.

You’ll hear ‘never-before-heard’ music, and music that may never be heard again.

Join the Handmade Music community in-person or online on the first Thursday of each month as we create this space for experimental/improvised music to exist…and seeing what comes out the other side.

Hope to see you there!

Christy Doran, Ronan Guilfoyle, Gerry Hemingway (2 x 20-25 min set approx)

Three leading improvisers in their respective countries, Swiss guitarist Christy Doran, Irish bassist Ronan Guilfoyle, and US drummer Gerry Hemingway come together to form an improvising supergroup of sorts. Although all three had played with each other in various configurations, the genesis of the trio goes back to a legendary performance at a festival in Switzerland in 2015. Taking to the stage as a trio for the first time, and with no prior rehearsal, the group’s instant connection and sense of improvisational adventure swept all before them. A promise was made to reconvene again and fully explore the possibilities revealed at the Swiss performance, and the time has now come.

Listeners can expect a kaleidoscopic exploration of guitar trio improvisation, featuring Christy Doran’s electric guitar mastery, Ronan Guilfoyle’s rhythmic intrigue, and Gerry Hemingway’s constant expansion of what drums are capable of in improvised music.

QUB Ensemble (10-15min set approx)

QUBe members will form the house band for the Handmade Music series. QUBe is a music collective based in Belfast involving students, staff, and musicians from inside and outside Queen’s University Belfast. QUBe brings together performers from diverse artistic backgrounds and musical interests.
