Alone on Friendship Island

Alone on Friendship Island

Despite the barriers, the heartbreak, the sorrow, the love, the loss, the overwhelming waves of emotion washing over you as you strive for happiness and the delicacy of a genuine connection in a world of vast isolation, you are never alone in the way you feel.

Why I gave the above rating:

I first heard David Allred through his duet work with the American singer-songwriter and composer Peter Broderick (who was for a time resident in Ireland). I’m still getting to know Allred’s back catalogue – there are several albums on Spotify – but Alone on Friendship Island, which was released on Erased Tapes on 11 November, has crept into my listening quite quickly. It has that characteristic melancholy which I hear in a lot of his work, and reminds me of Art Garfunkel’s 1975 album Breakaway, but there is something new and very contemporary about the lyrics: a refreshing, millennial honesty, such as on ‘Our Troubled Love’ – ‘we’re self-aware as hell, and anyone who thinks differently is probably not well’ – and ‘We’re Gonna Have Self Love’ – ‘when you don’t make enough time, For doing things alone, You won’t have a backbone strong enough’. An intriguing voice for our time.
