From The Front - Francis Ledwidge in focus
Award winning sean-nós interpreter, Lorcán Mac Mathúna, and uilleann piper, Éamonn Galldubh, contemplate the life and influences
of Francis Ledwidge, killed in the 3rd battle of Ypres 1917; with a cycle of songs arranged for wind instruments and voice.
Francis Ledwidge looked to a broad field within Irish traditions for inspiration. In the cramped and muddy trenches of the Western Front Ledwidge wrote and remembered. He wrote of the woods and fields of Meath, the twisting Boyne, and memories and legend, and a Rising in Dublin.
Lorcán and Éamonn draw on Ledwidge's poetry for this concert, including new musical settings for his lament for Thomas McDonagh and The Dead Kings.
With a selection of songs and music reflecting upon the connections of place and memory and the intrusion of grim reality, expect a moving and thoughtful evening where poetry meets music in the intimate and atmospheric setting of Rathfarnham Castle.
