Dates: Mondays, 8th March - 5th April 2021, 5-6.30pm

Course fee: £100 (£10 per hour)

A five-week Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) course targeted at adventurous vocalists interested in vocal improvisation, ideally with some previous improvising experience and the confidence to sing in front of others. A virtual ‘laboratory and practice room’, encouraging singers to develop a wider palette and toolkit in their improvisation, to expand their solo singing skills and confidence in the many ways that are viable within the online technologies available.

CVI is when a group of singers create music in-the-moment, each person generating their own sounds and patterns spontaneously and in response to others, starting from an agreed prompt or idea, unfolding from the shared silence or from one person breaking into song. As well as creativity and the courage to sing; mutual listening, responsiveness, flexibility and a willingness and capacity to collaborate are a must.

These qualities can be cultivated through games and exercises where singers develop their own imagination, musicianship, self-confidence and sound in parallel to learning to work as a team and to support each other.
