"One to watch," Cathal Murray of RTE1 on Leila Jane

"Christian Wethered's Leonard Cohen-parlando sound, alongside sharp imagery and spare melodies, makes him stand out from the crowd," Laura Klepeisz, Hotpress Magazine December 2022.

Two of the most promising up-and-coming indie / folk artists in Dublin join forces for a Double Headliner gig in Whelan's Upstairs on the 2nd of January.

Dublin based Spoken-Word Poet and singer-songwriter Christian Wethered has just released a full-length video for his song ‘Wait’. This follows recent performances at Beyond the Pale Festival, Arthur’s and Hot Spot.

I wanted the video to capture the emptiness of the city at night, the wind and the rain. The video is mainly about the dearth of opportunities out there right now, and the accompanying powerlessness this brings. The song also addresses ill-health, while wanting the world to wait –which of course it never does.

‘Wait’ is characterised by pounding drums and a Thom Yorke/ Jeff Buckley falsetto, the full band sound making for a slightly louder, though no less introspective, sound than on his debut album, ‘Mon Petit Jardin’.

This video comes only a few days after the video for his earlier single ‘La Madeleine’ won ‘Best Music Video’ at the Dublin International Short Film and Music Festival. As well as being an acclaimed musician, his debut poetry book, 'Harbour' also won the 2021 Melita Hume Prize. Blending his two passions, Christian’s spoken, poetic sound is something that stands him out from the crowd, offering Leonard Cohen-parlando sounds alongside sharp imagery and spare melodies.

Leila Jane is a Dublin-based recording artist with roots in London and Donegal. While possessing a voice that has been described as ‘’somewhere between Janis Joplin and Sandy Denny,’’ her music is an interpretation of the surreal paradoxical reality that the haunted soul often finds itself in. The raw and honest expression found in her work is a testament to her affinity with blues music.

After spinning her tune ‘Look So Sweet’ Cathal Murray of Late Date (RTE Radio 1) described Leila Jane as ‘’one to watch’’. The song was also added to Glastonbury’s Spotify playlist of 2019 performers. MP3 Hugger said of Leila’s latest single: ‘’Every second of ‘Look Away from Our Creation’ is key to the song’s success, it is meticulous without ever feeling as if it has been robbed of even a droplet of joie-de-vivre.’’ Hot Press Magazine once likened her to the ‘’sultry folk of Karen Dalton’’ and Golden Plec noticed Leila Jane’s ‘’passion and attention to detail’’ during her support performance for Chris Shiflett of the Foo Fighters.
