MANIFEST
A frank and unflinching new performance exploring the current state of masculinity.

Project Arts Centre | 23 February – 4 March 2023

Taking the form of a workshop, a group of men are facilitated in a conversation about what it means to be a man.

Drawing on testimony, research and the men’s own personal experiences, Manifest weaves between themes of violence, empathy, power and the suppression of vulnerability in a world where men can often be seen as a liability to themselves and others.

Manifest explores the physicality and psychology of masculinity combining movement, testimony and research to create an intensely honest and timely theatrical experience. The piece will explore societal expectations placed on boys and young men and how learned behaviours are perpetuated, particularly by the influence of other men.

Manifest was developed as part of What Does He Need? a long-term project by artist and writer Fiona Whelan, Brokentalkers and Rialto Youth Project, exploring how men and boys are shaped by and influence the world they live in.

Operating at the intersection of collaborative arts practice, performance, qualitative research and youth work, What Does He Need? aims to create significant public dialogue about the current state of masculinity. Developed in association with a Dublin city network of individuals and organisations in the areas of arts and culture, youth work, community development and education.

Written and directed by Feidlim Cannon and Gary Keegan, with movement direction by Eddie Kay, the cast includes Ben Sullivan, Tobi Balogun, Dara Clear and Noah Halpin.

Manifest is Co-Produced by Project Arts Centre and Town Hall Theatre, Galway.
Funded by The Arts Council of Ireland.
