For the final concert we look to Fauré’s later period and hear music written in his seventies. Still unashamedly Romantic, the music of this period has an elusive quality with its complex harmonic shifts and long lyrical lines. This is well evidenced in the first cello sonata and the composer’s only string quartet, written shortly before his death, music of sublime, supernatural beauty. Once again, we include a selection of Fauré’s song output, with two glorious late song cycles – Mirages and l’Horizon Chimérique.
