2% Arts Council Increase for Music and the Traditional Arts

€6.6m in funding offered to music, traditional arts and opera organisations.

Under its main annual funding for arts organisations for 2016, the details of which were posted online this week, the Arts Council has increased its funding for music and the traditional arts by 2%. Opera funding remained at the same level.

Twenty-one music organisations received funding of €3.39m, up from €3.31m in 2015; two opera organisations received €2.1m; and eight traditional arts organisations received €1.17m, up from €1.15m.

A total of €36,099,151 was awarded under the Annual Funding, Annual Programming Grant and Regularly Funded Organisations schemes, which means that music organisations received 9.4% of the total, opera received 5.8%, and traditional arts received 3.3%.

The awards included €1.42m for Wexford Festival Opera, €865,000 for Irish Chamber Orchestra, €680,000 for Opera Theatre Company, €620,000 for the Irish Traditional Music Archive, €515,000 for Music Network and €347,000 for Na Píobairí Uilleann.

Chamber Choir Ireland received an increase of 12%, from €323,000 to €362,000.
