15 Chamber Music Highlights this September

There is a range of chamber music taking place around Ireland this September.

Con Tempo Quartet, Galway Ensemble in Residence, began their season of monthly lunchtime concerts at Galway City Museum on 1 September, but they also have a 3 Saturdays: 3 Kinds of Music series of concerts on 5, 12 and 19 September at the Museum, in which they feature a range of artists, including Aisling Lyons (harp), Sean MacErlaine (clarinet, saxophone, electronics), Toner Quinn and Malachy Bourke (fiddles), David Conway (saxophone), Liz Coleman (fiddle) and Pablo Manjon-Cabezas Guzman (clarinet).

In their role as RTÉ Contempo Quartet, they will perform at Clifden Arts Festival with Ishay Shaer (piano) on 23 September, at the Cork School of Music on 24 September, and at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin on 27 September. On 25 September, the Quartet will perform works by Janáček and Haydn at the Granary Libary in Limerick.

The vocal ensemble Sestina, directed by counter tenor Mark Chambers, will perform three concerts this weekend – on Friday 4 September in St Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Armagh; Saturday 5 September in The Ulster Museum, Belfast; and Sunday 6 September in St Ann’s Church of Ireland, Dublin. They perform four major works by J.S. and J.C. Bach and will be accompanied by an instrumental ensemble led by Johannes Leertouwer and including Malcolm Proud (organ and harpsichord).

The 3rd Westport Festival of Chamber Music (11–13 September), promoted by Madeleine Flanagan of Classicallinks, features Artistic Directors Catherine Leonard and Hugh Tinney joined by Priya Mitchell (violin), Simon Aspell (viola), Guy Johnston (cello), Sylvia O’Brien (soprano), Jose Franch-Ballester (clarinet), Charles Owen (piano), Sinead O’Halloran (cello) and Gary Beecher (piano). The festival will present concerts in Westport House on Friday 11th September, Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 12th and Westport Town Hall on Sunday 13th. 

On 3 September, the Vanbrugh Quartet perform with Iarla Ó Lionáird at Limerick City Art Gallery, followed by a performance of Mozart, Schubert and Kraggerud at the Triskel Arts Centre on 5 September and Glór in Ennis on 18 September.

Elizabeth Cooney (violin) and Finghin Collins (piano) continue with the second part of their national tour following four concerts in July. They will perform works by Schubert, Szymanowski and Elgar on 17 September in City Hall, Waterford, Friday 18 September in Church of Ireland, Clifden, Co. Galway (presented by Clifden Arts Festival) and on Sunday 20 September at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin.

The Sundays at Noon series at the Hugh Lane Gallery begins this year on 6 September with a programme of Irish and baroque music by Sonamus, featuring Rachel Factor (harpsichord), Cormac Breatnach (traditional flutes and whistles), Annette Cleary (cello) and Eamon Sweeney (guitars).

The 10th New Ross Piano Festival (24–27 September) takes place in New Ross, Co. Wexford. With Artistic Director Finghin Collins, who will conduct three concertos for the opening gala concert (and play in one), the festival also features a number of chamber music concerts, including a late evening concert on Saturday 26 September where the Fidelio Trio will perform Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht. On Sunday, Collins and Cédric Tiberghien will perform Brahms’ Hungarian Dances for piano duet, and the Fidelio will perform Beethoven’s ‘Ghost’ trio.
