Composer Roger Doyle to perform free concert...

“Godfather of Irish electronic music” to perform a free piano concert…

Celebrated composer and the “godfather of Irish electronic music”, Roger Doyle will perform a free piano concert in the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin on Saturday August 27th at 2pm. The free concert will be filmed for the forthcoming documentary about him.

Titled ‘The Curious Works of Roger Doyle’, the documentary, which is being made by Irish filmmaker Brian Lally, is a retrospective look at five decades of his music and focuses on the staging of his first major opera, Heresy, which will open in The Project Arts Theatre on October 28th.

Although he has received accolades the world over, and is a member of Aosdana, Roger Doyle remains relatively unknown here outside of music circles, so much so that he is sometimes described as ‘the most famous Irish musician you’ve never heard of’.

Although retiring by nature, he has performed and collaborated with some of music’s biggest stars including Bono, and co-founded an experimental theatre company Operating Theatre with actress Olwen Fouere.

His new work, and first opera, Heresy is an imaginative, contemporary electronic opera based on episodes from the life and works of Giordano Bruno, one of the most brilliant and controversial figures of the Renaissance, with a libretto by noted playwright and dramaturg, Jocelyn Clarke.

Brian Lally has directed hundreds of corporate video productions as well as the award-winning Irish feature “8.5 Hours”. His short documentary “Alternative Model” was recently screened on RTE.

He has been filming Roger’s concerts for many years and was so intrigued by Roger’s unique style and range of music that he decided to make a documentary about him. He was also intrigued by the fact that Roger is an internationally renowned talent but at 67 is still not that well known by the Irish general public.
