Bang on a Can Media Workshop
The Bang on a Can Media Workshop, taking place at MASS MoCA (Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams, MA) from July 27 to August 4, 2024, offers a unique opportunity for writers in the early stages of their careers to delve into contemporary music criticism and journalism. Led by special guest faculty John Schaefer and Terrance McKnight, and alongside six selected writers, participants will explore effective communication about contemporary music to make it accessible and exciting to all audiences.
This workshop coincides with the final week of the Bang on a Can Summer Music Festival, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the festival’s activities, including rehearsals, performances, and workshops. This hands-on experience aims to enhance understanding of music’s staging process and foster a community among peers.
Applicants are required to submit a CV/resume, a personal statement detailing their interest in the workshop, and three writing or audio samples by April 4, 2024, at 5pm ET. The participation fee is $1800, covering tuition, shared accommodation, and meals, with participants responsible for their travel expenses. Applicants must be 21 or older, and while new music expertise is not mandatory, experience writing about music is preferred.
