DOYLE WINS MAGISTERIUM AWARD
Irish composer Roger Doyle has won the prestigious Magisterium Award at the Bourges International Electro-acoustic Music Competition in France for his work The Ninth Set. The award’s objective is ‘the promotion and diffusion of works that might become milestones in the history of electro-acoustic music’. Of his prize-winning work Doyle says, ‘To me the music has a supernatural feeling to it, but I have kept the title neutral, so that you can imagine what it is yourselves’. Visit www.rogerdoyle.com
HONORARY DOCTORATES
Nicholas Carolan, Tom Munnelly and Jane O’Leary have been awarded honorary doctorates by NUI Galway for services to musical life in Ireland. Carolan, Director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive since it was established in 1987, is a writer, frequent public lecturer and producer of archival recordings. He is best known for his work on the archival television series Come West Along the Road (RTÉ 1) and Siar an Bóthar (TG4). Munnelly is widely recognised as one of the world’s foremost collectors of traditional Irish songs in the English language, with over 20,000 songs collected to date. He is Collector-Archivist with the Delargy Centre for Irish Folklore and the National Folklore Centre in University College Dublin. O’Leary, a composer member of Aosdána, has written over 70 works which have been widely performed and broadcast. She established the pioneering ensemble Concorde in 1976 which has commissioned some 75 works and is a founder and current chairperson of Music for Galway.
MASTERS OF TRADITION
The Masters of Traditon Festival takes place in Bantry House, Cork, on 15–19 August. Featured musicians include Martin Hayes with and without Dennis Cahill, Andy Irvine, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Oisín MacDiarmada, Séan Smyth, Kevin Crawford and Máire Ní Chéileachair. The first Dún Laoghaire Festival of Traditional music takes place on 3–5 August in the Pavilion Theatre. Including performances by Frankie Gavin and Máirtín O’Connor, Tim Edey, Róisín Elsafty, Siobhán Armstrong, Harry Bradley, Jesse Smith, John Blake, Slide, Caoimhe Hogarty and Gavin Ralston, there is also ‘The Session’, a traditional-music show for children, with Robbie Harris and Emer Mayock. EBU FOLK FESTIVAL, CORK
Ireland will host the 28th European Broadcasting Union Folk Festival. The festival will take place as part of the Cork Folk Festival from 31 August to 2 September 2007, bringing together traditional musicians from across Europe.

Daithí Ó Sé presents The Full Set, a new traditional music series on RTÉ One. The series features live performances from St James’ Church, Dingle, and interviews with performers such as Matt Molloy, Liam O’Flynn, Paddy Glackin, Sean McKeon, Liam O’Connor and Josephine Marsh. The Full Set, produced by South Wind Blows, is aired Fridays at 7.30pm.
GLENN BRANCA IN IRELAND
New York composer Glenn Branca will be in Dublin for the performance of his Hallucination City: Symphony #13. The work will be performed by 100 local electric and bass guitarists as part of the Analog Festival in Grand Canal Dock on 15 July. Visit www.analogconcerts.ie
NEW EDITORIAL ASSISTANT
Benedict Schlepper-Connolly has been appointed Editorial Assistant with JMI. A composer based in Dublin, Benedict has been writing reviews and articles for the magazine since early 2006. He was founding editor of the Trinity College music magazine Writings About Music, is a curator of the Printing House Festival of New Music, and is a member of the Young Composers’ Collective.
