Waterford-Music have announced their new season of recitals continuing a long and unbroken tradition of classical music in the city. The first concert took on 17th September 1942 at the Large Room in City Hall when celebrity pianist Charles Lynch joined Herman Gebler , Beatrice Penrose and soprano Maura O Connor Tyrell. 75 years later in the same week and at the very same venue on 21st September, the spirit of that first occasion will be evoked in an evening of music and song spanning four centuries.
Soprano Róisín O Grady will be joined by Malcolm Proud on piano and harpsichord and cellist Aoife Nic Atlaoich in a unique programme. Among the Baroque and Romantic gems is a world premiere of a new work hot off the press and specially commissioned to mark the anniversary. The first performance of a setting of Michael Cody’ poem The Great Embrace by Marian Ingoldsby is eagerly anticipated. At the other end of the timeline, Barbara Strozzi wrote dramatic and sophisticated music in 17th century Venice that is increasingly finding its way onto programmes. We hear her sensual cantata Lagrime Mie.
