Galerum Gabrielis

Galerum Gabrielis consists of a unique due of Bayan and Baroque cello and give regular performances in both Helsinki and Ireland. The performers, Evin Kelly and Norah O’Leary are both students at the renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland and are former students of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. They are active advocates of Historically Informed Practice and together have refined a performance style of remarkable energy, elegance and flexibility.

Galerum Gabrielis are pleased to present their individual interpretations music from the late Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Norah plays a bohemian baroque cello c. 1750 and a baroque bow of snake wood and a copy of a late baroque bow made of snake wood and mastodon by Basil de Visser. The baroque cello differs only slightly in form from the modern instrument including a shorter and slightly more upright neck, gut strings and usually no spike.

Evin is performing on a bayan made by the Italian company Scandalli, more akin to a small lap organ than to the traditional piano accordion many of us know. With the tonal range of a piano and an array of registers the bayan is a versatile instrument that finds a welcome home in the world of early and contemporary music.
