The Jeremiahs
There are times when you hear a new group, and you think, wow!,
this is different. This is wonderful. The Jeremiahs' first album, selftitled,
hit that way. Now comes the group with their second creation,
The Femme Fatale of Maine. (More on the title in a bit) This is, at its
deepest core, Irish music, and the 10 tunes and songs on the album
are unique. Many Irish music aficionados have said they never heard
anything quite like this before, and they are right.
The warm, welcoming open door of the group is the voice of singer, Joe Gibney. He has the best and most
real, new Irish singing voice in years. James Ryan’s guitar, bouzouki and harmony work are perfectly tasteful
and complex. Jean-Christophe Morel’s fiddle is driving and brilliant. Guest musician Julian Bruneteau’s flute
work is a revelation. Any vocal/instrumental group depends first and foremost on its vocals. There stands Joe
Gibney. But, the more you listen to this group instrumentally, you realize you are onto something unique. On
this album, The Jeremiahs are joined by the popular Henry Girls, giving us the best harmony vocals in Irish
music, and arguably the music’s best bassist, Trevor Hutchinson.
Be it the rollicking creativity of The Wild Barrow Road, a song the group wrote about practicing a brand new
tune in the back of a car on the way to a gig, or the stunningly creative instrumental, Spring Fling, this album
delivers. Joe wrote the album’s title song, The Femme Fatale of Maine. This femme fatale is temptation itself,
and feel free to take your interpretation of the lyrics wherever you want. You’ve seen hundreds of these
album one-sheet descriptions over the years. Most are wildly overstated and the musical contents fail to
deliver. Listen to this album. You’ll hear whether or not this is all the usual hype. It is not, we promise you.
