New Irish Music in an International Context

Up Closewith Music presented by Concorde at the RHA Gallery continues on Sunday 22 February.  Performances feature new Irish music in an international context and take place from 2.30 – 4.30 in the Ryan Gallery where RHA New Acquisitions are on display.  Music from Ireland, USA, Finland and the UK will be performed by Concorde with guest artists RTE ConTempo Quartet.  Admission is Free to both performances, early arrival advised.

The programme features:

  • A new work for clarinet and string quartet commissioned from Irish composer Ed Bennett, director of Decibel Ensemble in Birmingham.
  •

  • Irish composer Amy Rooney’s quartet Foreground Background, selected for performance at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in 2014.  Amy was Concorde’s first Up Close student composer. The quartet is full of space, and encourages both performers and listeners to think of time in a different way.
  •

  • Ian Wilson’s response to Balkan folk melodies Četiri kamena in a version for violin, bass clarinet and accordion.  The title is Serbian for ‘four stones’, relating to a true story which involves honouring the unmarked grave of an infant.
  •

  • a fascinating work inspired by the singing style of Hindustani music by New York based composer Taylor Brook.  This will be the Irish premiere of his Vocalise for solo violin with drone accompaniment.
  •

  • Steamboat Bill Junior  - a duo for clarinet and cello by one of Finland’s most renowned composers, Magnus Lindberg. The title is from a Buster Keaton movie and the music is described by the composer as ‘kaleidoscopic writing.’
  •

  • a world premiere of Metamorphosis by Nirmali Fenn, Sri Lankan born composer now living in the UK.  The work explores the transformations that take place as a butterfly bursts forth from a cocoon.
  •

  • JaneO’Leary’s FanFare ConCorde, written in 2005 to celebrate the opening of an exhibition in Norman Villa Gallery, Galway, and dedicated to artist John Behan.
  • Performers in the February concert are Madeleine Staunton, flute; Paul Roe, clarinets; Dermot Dunne, accordion; and special guests – the RTE ConTempo Quartet.

RHA Gallery exhibitions feature new work by artists Michael Cullen, Nick Miller, Mark Garry, Amelia Stein and Mollie Douthit.  The concert will take place in the Ryan Gallery, where RHA New Acquisitions will be on show. Coppa Cafe is open from 12 Noon, serving Italian snacks, wine and coffees. Enjoy a relaxed and inspiring afternoon in the company of fine artists – both visual and aural!

Up Close with Music is supported by a Project Award from the Arts Council.  Partnership with the RHA Gallery is gratefully acknowledged.
