Tuesdays (from 9th June) @ 2pm - 3.30pm GMT.

This workshop series proposes a 'coming to know' via the art of music.

How is it possible to learn about our world through music, and how can this approach lead to an embodied form of knowledge impossible to reach through words, images or numbers alone?

Exploring a diverse terrain of scientific, literary and philosophical ideas, participants will have an opportunity to think through music's unique hermeneutic potential and develop their own responses.

Drawing on work developed as artist-in-residence at the European Space Agency (ESTEC), California Academy of Sciences (CalAcademy) and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), as well as collaborations with scientists from such diverse fields as forest canopy ecology, quantum physics, evolutionary genetics, mathematical biology and fluid dynamics, and with a selection of major literary works, the MaTE sessions explore the idea that music has a unique potential to act as a way to knowledge - essentially that it is possible to 'know' through music.

The course is divided into five parts:

1. Tuesday 9th June

The Water Project and the Flocking Series (90')

2. Tuesday 16th June

Forest Canopy Ecology and the Evolutionary Genetics of the Orchid (90')

3. Tuesday 23rd June

Space I - Astrophysics and Quantum Mechanics (90')

4. Tuesday 30th June

Music and Language (90')

5. Tuesday 7th July

Participant Response (120')

This workshop series is designed for performers or composers from any discipline, or anyone with an interest in general Arts-Science or Music-Philosophy collaborations.
