Tarab & Nafra
Friday 18th
Mermaid Arts Center, Bray
Tickets €14/12
Working in partnership the Big Bang Festival of Rhythm and Bray Mermaid Arts Centre are presenting Tarab & Nafra.
Tarab a five-piece Irish ensemble led by Italian accordionist Francesco Turrisi and features saxophonist Nick Roth, cellist Kate Ellis, traditional flautist Emer Mayock and percussionist Robbie Harris. Tarab is an ensemble that aims at creating an imaginary link between aesthetic elements of Mediterranean music and the Irish instrumental and vocal tradition.
Playing as part of a double bill that will also feature the Nafra folk trio led by Ruben Zahra who is a major international exponent of Malta’s music heritage. Ruben established the Nafra folk trio portraying a versatile programme of Mediterranean folk-fusion embellished by the unique Maltese traditional instruments.
This innovative approach to Mediterranean music has led Nafra to perform within major music festivals all over Europe as well as in Tunisia, Hong Kong and India.
Each ensemble will perform a 45-minute set of own works and the evening will culminate in a joint performance. The reasoning behind bringing together the two ensembles is simple - the mutual interest and inspiration drawn from Mediterranean music and culture.
The event is being supported by the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Dublin as part of its cultural diplomacy initiatives, towards promoting Malta’s culture and heritage in Ireland and fostering collaboration between Maltese and Irish artists.
