Scoil Gheimhridh Frankie Kennedy

The lineup for this year’s Scoil Gheimhridh Frankie Kennedy (Frankie Kennedy Winter School) has been announced. Taking place in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal, from 27 December to 1 January, the Scoil Gheimhridh will include performances from Andy Irvine, Iarla Ó Lionáird, Steve Cooney, At First Light, Altan, Séamie O’Dowd and Breanndán Begley, among others.

Classes will be given in fiddle, guitar, flute, bodhrán, uilleann pipes, accordion, tin whistle, concertina and dancing — classes are limited to ten so early registration is advisable.

The annual lecture will be given by Ciaran Carson, together with his wife, the fiddle player Deirdre Shannon. There will also be a series of workshops for children.

Liam Ó Maonlaí has been announced as the recipient of the third Gradam Francie Mooney award, which goes to a singer-songwriter who has performed or written in the Irish language.

The Scoil Geimhridh was founded in 1994 after the death of the flute player and Altan member Frankie Kennedy.
