Zoë Keating Publishes Streaming Revenue Data

The Canadian-born cellist Zoë Keating caused a stir this week when she published complete details of her digital music streams. A Google Doc available to the public shows income from sources such as iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Cloud Drive and YouTube.

The highest paying service per stream was XBox Music, paying an average of $0.13 per stream in May 2013. The lowest paying was Amazon Cloud Drive, paying only $0.0002 per stream in March 2013. iTunes Match paid between $0.0012 and $0.0025 per stream, depending on the territory, and Spotify averaged at $0.0059.

The revenue was for streams of two of Keating’s older releases (from 2005 and 2006 respectively) as reported in the period January to June 2013. Keating digitally distributes her albums through the US-based service CDBaby, and the figures quoted are after CDBaby’s 9% cut on every sale.

Keating said she released the figures in an attempt to create a discussion about the structure of the music industry. In a previous Google Document about her digital earnings, Keating said, ‘In the interest of evolving the discussion, I am making myself into a data point. I encourage other artists, if they are able, to do the same.’

In an earlier blog post Keating said that she would trade her streams for data about the people listening to her music. ‘I want my data and in 2012 I see absolutely no reason why I shouldn’t own it. It seems like everyone has it, and exploits it… everyone but the creators providing the content that services are built on.’

Note: All figures have been rounded to four decimal points.
