Royal Opera House announces new Director of Opera

The Danish director Kaspar Holten will take over from Eliane Padmore at the end of this season.

"The Royal Opera House, London, has announced the Danish director Kaspar Holten as its new Director of Opera. Holten (37) will succeed Eliane Padmore at the end of the 2010/2011 season.

Holten has been Artistic Director of the Royal Danish Opera since 2000 and, in 2005, he presided over the company’s move into the new opera house in Copenhagen. His production of Wagner’s Ring ran from 2003 until 2006. Last year, Holten filmed a modern cinematic version of Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni, titled Juan.

‘I had promised myself to focus more on my artistic work when my contract in Copenhagen expires this summer,’ said Holten, ‘but if there is one job in the world I cannot resist, it is this one.’
