Raymond Deane's Diary of the Night

The Irish composer Raymond Deane – whose new opera, The Alma Fetish, was recently premiered in Dublin – has launched an appeal for funding to bring out an album of piano works, titled Noctuary. The composer, who turned sixty this year, writes that he is forces to follow the FundIt route to finance the release because of the recession. ‘At such times state funding for the arts — modest at the best of times — tends to be hit hard,’ he said.

The project features the pianist Hugh Tinney and is conceived as a ‘nighttime diary’, referencing various images associated with the night and literary sources, including Minerva’s owl, the Versipel, the Mezzotint (from a story by M.R. James) and ‘hitherandthithering waters of the night’ from James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake.

The album will be brought out on the Resonus Classics label and recorded in studios made available by RTÉ Lyric FM, with artwork by Renate Debrun. The recording will be made across two days in October, with a release in the spring of 2014. ‘All involved in this project are convinced that the album will be a fitting culmination to an intense three-year collaboration between Hugh Tinney and myself,’ writes the composer.

Funders can receive various rewards, including a signed score of The Alma Fetish, a signed print by Renate Debrun and of course copies of the recording. Deane is looking for a total of €6,000 to bring the project to completion. See below for full information.
