Gael Linn Reissue of Seán Mac Donnchadha Album

Originally issued as an LP in 1986, and now reissued as a CD by Gael Linn, Bruach na Beirtrí features the sean nós singer, Seán Mac Donnchadha (Johnny Mháirtín Larry) singing ‘Contae Mhaigh Eo’, ‘Johnny Seoighe’, ‘Amárach Lá ‘le Pádraig’, ‘Cuauchín Ghleann Néifin’, ‘Bríd Thomáis Mhurchu’, ‘Baile an Róba’, ‘Amhrán Mhuínse’, and ‘An Casaideach Bán’. Four tracks feature accordion player Máirtín Ó Cualáin, playing the sets ‘Saddle the Pony’ and ‘Happy to meet, sorry to part’; ‘Collier’s reel’ and ‘My love is in America’; ‘Swallow’s Tail’ and ‘Miss McCleod’s’ and ‘Drowsie Maggie’; and a jig labelled ‘Poirt Uí Chualáin’ (‘The Blarney Pilgrim’, according to TunePal).

Mac Donnchadha is a native of Carna, Conamara. Growing up he mixed with singers such as Colm Ó Cíodháin and Seosamh Ó hÉanaigh. At the Oireachtas festival in 1985, he won the Corn Uí Riada. He has travelled extensively to sing at festivals and concerts at home and abroad and is heard regularly on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta.
