Building a City

We paid a visit to the Kinsale-born composer Linda Buckley in her Dublin home ahead of the premiere of a new work for the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. The piece – chiyo – was inspired by three haikus by the eighteenth-century Japanese poet Chiyo-ni.

In this video, Buckley talks about how writing for orchestra is like building a city, the closeness of orchestral and electronic music, the search for an ecstatic experience and why beauty should never be a dirty word.

Chiyo, conducted by Alan Buribayev, will be premiered at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, on Friday, 27 May 2011. www.nch.ie
