Alarm Will Sound, the twenty-member New York-based contemporary music ensemble, will perform in Ireland for the first time on 6 June.

Taking place at Cork Opera House, the concert will feature a multimedia production of John Cage’s Song Books, conceived and directed by Nigel Maister, in celebration of the composer’s centenary.

Song Books contains a large number of solos for voice (which can be performed by multiple voices), some with electronic accompaniment, and some with theatrical components. It sets texts by Henry David Thoreau, R. Buckminster Fuller and others. The compendium-like work originated in 1970, a time when Cage was turning back towards fully notated composition, albeit with the persistence of graphic notation and other indeterminate elements.

Tickets for the show cost €26 and are available from corkoperahouse.ie.
