Phil Ware Commences Six-Month Residency at Triskel

New jazz initiative includes outreach, mentoring and five major concerts featuring international and Irish artists.

Jazz pianist Phil Ware has commenced a six-month residency at Triskel in Cork with a concert featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein.

The concert in October was the first of five major concerts taking place up to March 2016 and featuring a range of Irish and international artists.

The residency also includes a programme of outreach initiatives and mentoring. Commenting on the new initiative, Phil Ware said,

The residency is the first of its kind in Ireland. Not only will it unite some of the finest musicians from the international and Irish jazz scenes in collaboration over five concerts, it will also give a selected group of students from CIT Cork School of Music and tutors from Music Generation a unique chance to study and play with these musicians in an unparalleled series of workshops and masterclasses.

The international artists to feature in the remaining four concerts are Ian Shaw, Anders Bergcrantz, Marie Séférian, Miguel Gorodi, Orlando Molina, Ryan Quigley, Julien Colarossi, Kit Downes, Stan Sulzmann and Georgie Fame. The Irish artists are Phil Ware, Dave Redmond, Kevin Brady, Dermot Dunne, Ronan Guilfoyle, Sean Carpio, Cormac O’Brien, Shane O’Donovan, Karl Rooney, Cormac McCarthy, Eoin Walsh, Davie Ryan and Hugh Buckley.

December’s concert sees the Phil Ware Trio, vocalist Ian Shaw and trumpeter Anders Bergcrantz focusing on popular song, with a particular emphasis on the catalogue of Burt Bacharach. January’s Brazil-focused performance features an eight-strong group showcasing compositions by Hermeto Pascoal.

Rising star Kit Downes features alongside celebrated saxophonist Stan Sulzmann in Cormac O’Brien’s quartet in February, sharing a double bill with Cork trombonist, composer and arranger Paul Dunlea’s seven-piece group. Finally, the residency comes to a close in March as rhythm and blues and jazz legend Georgie Fame returns to Ireland in the company of Irish guitarist Hugh Buckley and the Phil Ware Trio.

UK-born Ware made the transition from blues to jazz in his early twenties. After moving to Ireland, he established himself as a major player on the scene and has been much in demand from Irish and international musicians. His career has taken him throughout Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East, and his long-standing trio with bassist Dave Redmond and drummer Kevin Brady has twice represented Ireland at the Eurojazz Festival in Mexico City.

Initiated by Music Network, the Phil Ware residency was developed in partnership with Triskel Arts Centre and is supported by Cork City Council.
