Irish Women in Harmony – Only a Woman
Irish Women in Harmony, a group of musicians including songwriter RuthAnne, Erica Cody, and Aimee, have just released their latest single ‘Only a Woman’. The song was inspired by the Eleanor McEvoy song ‘Only a Woman’s Heart’ and includes its chorus, with spoken word verses written by poet and performer Felispeaks. ‘I got the idea for this new track from the public reaction to “Dreams”, when people said the Irish Women In Harmony collective reminded them of A Woman’s Heart’, said RuthAnne. ‘Our new single “Only A Woman” is about what it is to be a woman today… We hope the song connects and inspires and empowers a new age of womanhood for all.’ This pop and hip hop-centric take on the classic song also features Eleanor McEvoy performing vocals and follows previous releases ‘Together at Christmas’ and ‘Dreams’. Alannah Thornburgh – Branjo
Harp-player Alannah Thornburgh has this week released a live video for her composition ‘Branjo’. The sombre, moody tune – which follows ‘The Front’, released in April – will feature on Thornburgh’s debut solo album, due to be released later this year. Commenting on composing ‘Branjo’, Thornburgh said ‘I wrote this tune four years ago as a gift for a friend of mine who happens to be one of the finest musicians I know. I wanted to create a dissonant and unresolved sound, an audible tension that reflected the headspace I was in at the time of writing.’ Thornburgh is a recipient of the Arts Council’s 2021 Next Generation Artists Award and will also release an album with her band Alfi later this year. David Keenan – Sentimental Dole
‘Sentimental Dole’ is the latest release from singer-songwriter David Keenan, following ‘Bark’ and ‘Peter O’Toole’s Drinking Song’ – all of which will feature on the upcoming album WHAT THEN?, out on Rubyworks on 15 October. ‘Sentimental Dole’ is upbeat with a choppy backing on rhythm guitar and is a call for self-determination and empowerment.  Purchase the track on Bandcamp: https://davidkeenan.bandcamp.com/

Máire Carroll & Kristan Swain – Oíche Mhaith a Sheáin

The piece features on Carroll’s Hidden Pianos album, which was released in May and presents a collection of original compositions with guest musicians including Swain on flute and Dewi Garmon Jones on horn. Each track on the album is paired with a commissioned illustration or photograph. The artwork for ‘Oíche Mhaith a Sheáin’ was created by illustrator Tara O’Brien.
