Music Network has announced its programme of tours for spring 2023, starting in February. The series will include five tours with Irish and international musicians from the worlds of traditional, folk, classical and jazz in venues across the country.

Starting on 8 February will be a four-piece with Noriana Kennedy of The Whileaways and Solas on vocals and banjo; Cherish the Ladies’ Mirella Murray on accordion; Donogh Hennessy, guitarist and founding member of Lúnasa; and Téada’s Oisín Mac Diarmada on fiddle. The group will perform 11 dates, beginning at St John’s Theatre & Arts Centre in Listowel and finishing at the Station House Theatre in Clifden on 20 February. 

New work
From 12 to 21 March, the string trio of violist Maxim Rysanov, violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky and cellist Dóra Kokas will perform in venues in Bantry, Dublin, Dún Laoghaire, Kilkenny, Wicklow, Carrick-on-Shannon, Letterkenny and Clifden. The tour will be the first time the musicians have performed together as a trio and will include performances of works by Mozart, Beethoven, Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova and a Music Network commission by Irish composer Ed Bennett.

In April, soprano Claudia Boyle, trumpet player Niall O’Sullivan and pianist Brian Connor will perform nine concerts from 13 to 26 April across Cork, Clifden, Roscommon, Dún Laoghaire, Limerick, Kilkenny, Clare, Dublin and Bray. Their programme will include a new work by Irish composer Solfa Carlile, arrangements of Handel’s ‘Let The Bright Seraphim’, Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in Eb, operatic works by Donizetti and Verdi, music by Piazzolla and more. 

Folk, roots and jazz
Kentucky fiddle and hardanger fiddle player Liz Knowles, Congolese guitarist and vocalist Niwel Tsumbu and concertina player Niall Vallely will present a series of concerts from 3 to 14 May. They will visit Triskel Christchurch in Cork, Fiddle Fair in Baltimore, The Sugar Club in Dublin, Waterford City Hall and Roscommon Arts Centre, among others, with a programme of folk and roots drawing from each of their musical backgrounds. 

Closing the season, from 13 to 22 June, is a series by a duet of jazz musicians – Malaysian-Australian bassist Linda May Han Oh and pianist Fabian Almazan. These accomplished improvisers and composers will perform a programme of original works with Almazan’s music taking inspiration from his Cuban background and training in jazz and classical combined with Oh’s virtuosic playing and composition.
