The Dublin International Piano Competition (DIPC) has announced the appointment of pianist Finghin Collins as its new Artistic Director. He succeeds John O’Conor, the organisation’s first Artistic Director who held the role for 36 years.

Collins is one of Ireland’s best-known classical musicians. He studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with O’Conor and at the Geneva Conservatoire with Dominique Merlet, winning first prize at the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland in 1999. He has performed solo and with many ensembles and orchestras across Ireland, Europe, the US and the Far East and also works as a programmer, commissioner and concert presenter. He has served as the Artistic Director of the New Ross Piano Festival since 2006 and as Artistic Director with Music for Galway since 2013. He will chair the jury of the Clara Haskil International Piano Competition in Switzerland in 2023 and 2025.

Commenting on his appointment, Collins said:

I pay tribute to my predecessor John O’Conor for all the hard work and dedication he has devoted to the Competition, alongside his co-founders Ann Fuller, Laurie Cearr and the late Ida Delamer. I will do my very best to write the next chapter in the DIPC’s story together with Adrienne Carolan and a new Assistant Administrator who will be appointed in the coming weeks.

The next Competition will take place in May 2025 and in the intervening years we hope to organise many events to keep the Competition active and present in people’s minds. We look forward to having Yukine Kuroki, the brilliant winner of the 2022 Competition, back in Ireland many times to remind us of her dazzling talent.

Composer and pianist Laura Heneghan has been named the winner of this year’s Seán Ó Riada Composition Competition. Heneghan’s composition, Draíocht na Farraige, will receive its world premiere from the Chamber Choir Ireland at St Fin Barre’s Cathedral on 28 April as part of the Cork International Choral Festival.

Her composition was chosen by a judging panel including composer and singer Eoghan Desmond, composer Rhona Clarke and Sofi Jeannin, Guest Director of Chamber Choir Ireland. The panel said the piece ‘shows a consistent style with a sensitive handling of this beautiful Irish text. It demonstrates the composer’s fluency in choral writing.’

Commenting on her win, Heneghan said:

It is an incredible opportunity, and I am looking forward to working with [Chamber Choir Ireland] closely as the festival draws closer! ‘Draíocht na Farraige’ (The Magic of the Sea) is a poem derived from the book Trócaire Dé agus Dánta Eile by the late Maria Goretti Ní Fhéinne. The poet discusses the Spiddal seaside in County Galway in a beautifully descriptive way, and I thought this imagery could be greatly enhanced by a choir.

The annual competition is a collaboration between the Cork International Choral Festival and Chamber Choir Ireland. The competition was established in 1972 to honour the life and work of Seán Ó Riada.
