Irish National Opera Online Series Starts Today

Opera sessions will feature five different singers each week for five weeks.

Irish National Opera will today (29 May) begin a new series of online opera performances starting at 5pm. The ‘Friday Opera Sessions’ series, which will take place once a week for five weeks, will feature five singers in each episode, and will be introduced by INO Artistic Director Fergus Sheil, who will also speak to the singers and introduce the works.

The first episode will see performances by mezzo-sopranos Naomi Louisa O’Connell and Carolyn Dobbin, soprano Aoife Miskelly, tenor Gavan Ring and bass-baritone Rory Dunne. Pianist Aoife O’Sullivan will accompany throughout for works including Mozart’s ‘Se vuol ballare’ (Rory Dunne), Donizetti’s ‘Deh! non voler costringere’ (Carolyn Dobbin), and Puccini’s ‘Che gelida manina’ (Gavan Ring).

Singers to feature in future episodes include mezzo-soprano Sharon Carty, sopranos Claudia Boyle, Anna Devin and Amy Ní Fhearraigh, tenor Andrew Gavin and baritone Aaron O’Hare. The line-up for each episode will be announced one week in advance.

Commented on the series, Sheil said:

In the absence of live performances for large audiences, we have made our back catalogue of productions available online… and we have now embraced the challenge of linking musicians across borders to bring you performances by singers from our operatic family who share our determination to overcome the peculiar difficulties of performing together over the internet. Expect the results to have something of the freshness and edge of an operatic jam session.

Irish National Opera’s Friday Opera Sessions will take place every Friday from 29 May to 26 June. To view the series, visit www.youtube.com/channel/
