As previously reported in these pages, Dublin is shortly to receive a new gamelan as a gift from the Sultan of Yogyakarta, Java. Composer and gamelan expert Peter Moran is in Java at the moment inspecting the new set of instruments as their construction nears completion.

In the following video, Moran visits the workshop of Pak Poniman where the instruments are being built. Accompanying him is the Sultan’s brother, Gusti Bendoro Pangeran Haryo Yudhaningrat (known as Gusti Yuda), and the two engage in an impromptu Gamelan session.

Classes using the new gamelan will start in Dublin in January 2014.
