Desi Wilkinson Appointed Traditional Artist in Residence at UCC

Flute-player will deliver a series of concerts, workshops, lectures and seminars over the course of the residency.

Flute-player and teacher Desi Wilkinson has been appointed Traditional Artist in Residence at University College Cork for 2015–16. 

Wilkinson is an acclaimed traditional musician from Belfast. He has a distinctive Ulster style and technique but with influences from the Sligo and Roscommon flute traditions. 

He plays concert flute, tin whistle, fiddle, bagpipes and clarinet, and he has a strong interest in traditional song. He has performed and recorded with a wide range of artists and is a founder member of the group Cran, Wilkinson has two solo albums.

Prior to his appointment as Traditional Artist in Residence, Wilkinson worked as a full time lecturer at the International Centre for Music Studies at Newcastle University. His book on dance music and the socio-political world in Brittany, Call to the Dance, is due out in November with Pendragon Press (New York). He has already published several articles about the social and aesthetic aspects of Irish traditional music. 

Wilkinson will be hosted by The School of Music and Theatre at UCC and will deliver a series of concerts, workshops, lectures and seminars over the course of his one-year residency, beginning in October. The residency is supported by the Arts Council.
