Submerge Digital Arts Festival To Feature Shows and Installations on Theme of 'Belonging'

The Bristol festival will feature premieres from Guillaume Marmin and Jan Mocek, and music by Gazelle Twin, Actress and Sue Zuki.

The 2019 Submerge digital arts festival will take place in Bristol on 1–10 March, presenting music, theatre, installation, visual and sound art through interdisciplinary performances, installations, club nights and talks.

The theme for this year’s festival is ‘Belonging’, intended as a counterpoint to a ‘year fraught with conflict’, and explores ideas of community, connection and reflection. Attendees navigate the programme of events as a self-designed journey, experiencing each element successively.

The festival will open on 1 March with a discussion with French audiovisual artist Guillaume Marmin about his artistic processes, followed by the UK premiere of his work Licht, mehr Licht! (‘Light, more light!’), titled after the last words of Goethe and exploring near-death experiences through light and sound. The afternoon of 2 March will see the UK premiere of Czech artist Jan Mocek’s Shadow Meadow, a light and sound work using physically perceptible sounds through sub bass.

AI-based performances
Live art and music with artificial intelligence also features strongly in the programme, with electonic music artist Actress performing with AI-based learning programme Young Paint (8 Mar, SWX), while Kawasaki Plant, a collaborative project between performance artist Bean and sound engineer Cherif Hashizume, uses new audiovisual machine-learning programmes responsive to the artist’s body (9 Mar, Arnolfini).

Other musicians featured at the festival include Gazelle Twin (1 Mar, Exchange), experimental musician Graham Dunning  (9 Mar, Loco Klub), DJ and producer Batu (2 Mar, Loco Klub), Scottish synth musician Sue Zuki (2 Mar, Circomedia), and composer and soundartist Duncan Speakman, whose music and narrative soundwalk It Music Have Been Dark By Then takes place a number of times throughout the festival.
