Wood Quay Summer Sessions 1: Jazz with BigSpoon
Wood Quay Summer Sessions return in July for a series of online lunchtime concerts broadcast from Dublin City Council’s beautiful Wood Quay Venue. Now in its sixth year, this ever-popular outdoor series is moving online for 2020, with four unique online concerts streaming from 1pm on Thursdays throughout July on the Wood Quay Summer Sessions Facebook page.
The series kicks off on the 9th of July with mesmerising contemporary jazz from Chris Engel's BigSpoon. South African saxophonist and adopted Irishman Engel has cultivated a successful career in jazz and improvised music throughout Europe with his chameleon-like musical talents; adept in small and large ensembles, free improv, contemporary jazz, and latterly electronic music. Through this lens of electronic bits and bytes, BigSpoon emerges. This musical offering is a crystallization of Chris’ musical journey which brings all of his musical impulses and influences to bear in the company of some of Ireland’s leading improvisers and electro-sonic explorers. BigSpoon creates a sound world designed to immerse both the artist and the audience in a shared musical experience. With influences ranging from Jaga Jazzist to Weather Report, this is visceral and mesmerizing 21st century jazz with organic heart and electronic soul.
Founded by Dublin City Council and presented in association with First Music Contact, Improvised Music Company, Contemporary Music Centre, & Music Network, the Wood Quay Summer Sessions allow music fans to experience an incredible mix of music from new and established traditional, jazz, contemporary and alt-rock acts.
In addition to the video performances from the four acts, Dublin's Near FM 90.3 will broadcast the concerts each Thursday at 6pm, alongside behind-the-scenes chats with the artists.
