Between Your Love and Mine - a requiem by Leonard Cohen
When I first saw this show I was struck by the sheer beauty and integrity of it - President Michael D Higgins following a performance of Between your love and mine.
During a conversation with Leonard Cohen, with whom he had a thirty-year friendship, in the early summer of 2016, John MacKenna broached the possibility of a collaboration on a requiem for stage, in memory of young people who had died.
Leonard listened; MacKenna went away and worked on a draft of the project - a requiem Mass for theatre using only Leonard's words and music.
Over the summer they collaborated on shaping the final work - BETWEEN YOUR LOVE AND MINE : a requiem by Leonard Cohen.
In October of 2016 Leonard gave his blessing to the completed script. Sadly, two weeks later he died.
Between Your Love and Mine premiered at VISUAL Carlow in the summer of 2017, in the presence of the President, Michael D Higgins, and the Canadian Ambassador. It played at seven venues as part of a short tour that followed.
So impressed was President Higgins by the requiem that he invited the company to perform it at Áras an Uachtaráin on Culture Night 2017.
